Definitions
Seedling type describes
how the seedling was grown and the age of the seedling.
Plug seedlings are grown in a
container.
P – This indicates a plug seedling.
Seedling was produced in a container (usually in a greenhouse) for
one year.
#2Plug – This number indicates the
size of the cell a seedling is grown in. #2 describes a 2 cubic inch
cavity. Cavity size can vary from 2 cubic inches to as much as 20
cubic inches. (#4 plug, #6 plug. Etc)
P2 - This indicates a two year old
seedling grown in a container for two years.
Bare root seedlings are produced in
beds in the soil.
Bare root trees have two digit
descriptors that together indicate the growing environment and the
age of the seedling. The first digit indicates the time in the seed
bed (or greenhouse) and the second digit indicates the time in a
transplant bed.
Example:
Indicates 1 year in the seed bed
and no time in a transplant bed. (A one year old tree)
Indicated two years in the seed
bed and no time in the transplant bed (A 2 year old tree)
Indicates 1 year in the
seedbed and 1 year in the transplant bed. (A 2 year old
tree)
Indicates 1 year in the
seedbed and 2 years in the transplant bed. (A 3 year old
tree)
P+1 Indicates 1 year in a container
and 1 year in the transplant bed. (A 2 year old tree)

Seedlings
Individually wrapped tree seedlings:
Trees that are grown in a stryofoam container with small individual cavities. Each seedling is extracted
and the root looks like a brown carrot about 4" long and ½ inches across. The root has grown around
the soil so the seedling is not bare but protected by the soil it was planted in. The stem of the tree
looks like a miniature tree about 6 - 12 inches tall. This seedling is then placed in a clear plastic bag
about 15 inches long and about 11/2 inches around. The baggies have planting instructions on them.
We can personalize your bags with your sticker or tag tied to the bag. We can also wrap each seedling
in burlap and it will look like a miniature balled and burl aped tree.
